Interdisciplinary research to reduce mortality from HIV-associated fungal infections

Prof David Lawrence is an HIV and Sexual Health doctor from the UK, an Associate Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a recently-appointed Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Pathology at Wits University.

David lived in Botswana from 2017-2021 and was the lead clinician for the AMBITION-cm trial of a novel treatment approach to HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis. David’s work spans multiple disciplines (clinical trials, epidemiology, diagnostics, health economics and anthropology) but is unified by an unwavering drive to reduce morbidity and mortality from advanced HIV disease. He co-leads SHARE-CM, an implementation project which aims to maximise the impact of the AMBITION-cm trial in routine care settings and is Clinical Lead of the IMPRINT Global Health Research Group for HIV-associated fungal infections. David also works on several ongoing clinical trials including the EFFECT trial of combination anti-fungal therapy for cryptococcal antigendemia and IMPALA, a trial of long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy for people with a history of adherence challenges. David works closely with Prof Nelesh Govender in the Faculty of Health Sciences, with whom he co-supervises recently appointed PhD student Ms Tshiamo Mmotsa.
